Clinton, McCain win in California

Clinton, McCain win in California

The Associated PressArticle Launched: 02/05/2008 10:38:33 PM PST LOS ANGELES - John McCain overpowered Mitt Romney in California's big-prize presidential primary Tuesday, capping the Arizona senator's Super Tuesday rout with a win in the nation's most populous state.

McCain had 44 percent of the vote to Romney's 25 percent with 20 percent of precincts reporting.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee trailed with 12 percent.

With his win in California, McCain cemented his front-runner status after rolling up a string of victories on the delegate-rich East Coast.

Hillary Rodham Clinton won the Democratic side in California, a state closely identified with her husband's eight-year presidency.

Clinton had 54.8 percent to 32.6 percent, for Barack Obama with 16 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday night.

Voter exit polls showed Clinton receiving strong support from women and Hispanics and voters in the Bay Area.

California voters displayed a marked gender gap, with women favoring Clinton and men leaning toward Obama, according to the surveys.

More than 6 in 10 Hispanics favored Clinton in the exit survey, while nearly 8 in 10 black voters favored Obama.

Clinton had a built-in advantage because of her husband's presidency and she maintained a wide lead in pre-election polls until the final week of the race.

Hispanic voters, in particular, have fond memories of Bill Clinton. Many, such as Erendida Vargas, cast their first ballots during his eight years as president.

Vargas, a 32-year-old housekeeper from Los Angeles, said gender politics also played a role in her decision to vote again for a Clinton.

"She's great, and she is going to be the first woman president," Vargas said. "Everything men do, we can do it, too, so we have to show everybody we can do it, too."

Other voters said they chose Clinton over Obama because they thought she was better prepared to become president.

"I believe she's going in with wide eyes," said John Freiman, 42, of Oakland. "She understands the problems and how to solve them."

But James Gottfurcht, a 60-year-old psychologist from Los Angeles, said Obama seemed like the better leader.

"I experience him as genuine and natural," he said. "Whereas, Hillary I see as slick and polished, more of a politician and part of the establishment."

He said was also skeptical about having Bill Clinton back in the White House.

Clinton and Obama waged the liveliest race California has seen in 40 years for the Democratic nomination for president.

Each staked a claim to making history: she as the first woman and he as the first black man to become the party's nominee.

Californians also had to decide on a slate of Indian gambling measures that would clear the way for even larger casinos and dramatically expand the state's gambling industry, already second only to Nevada's.

Propositions 94-97 were leading in early returns. With 13 percent of precincts reporting, each of the four measures had about 57 percent of the vote, compared to about 43 percent against.

The four propositions asked voters to affirm deals Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and state lawmakers struck last year with four wealthy Southern California Indian tribes. In exchange for the rights to add 17,000 slot machines - enough to fill eight Las Vegas-sized casinos - the tribes would share hundreds of millions of dollars in casino winnings annually with the cash-strapped state.

Schwarzenegger bet that voters would approve the deals. The budget he proposed last month assumed almost a half-billion dollars in new revenue from the casino-operating tribes. California faces a projected $14.5 billion shortfall over the next 18 months.

Baca blasts war in Iraq, its costs
Rialto Dem backs party's deadlines

RIALTO - Rep. Joe Baca railed against the war in Iraq on Saturday, telling local Democrats that the days of giving President Bush a blank check for the costly conflict are over.

As special guest at a Greater Rialto Democratic Club luncheon, Baca, D-Rialto, touched on a number of other hot issues, including trade and immigration.

But war was on Baca's mind. Armed with statistics and the recent revelations of substandard care for wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Medical Center, the four-term congressman said Republicans had hid behind patriotic slogans while waging a long, costly and ineffective war effort based on false pretenses.

"(Congress) will not write a carte blanche check like we have in the past," Baca told about 20 local Democrats gathered at El Kiosco Mexican Restaurant. "There's been a lot of waste, and not a lot of accountability. ... It's time to hold the Iraqis responsible for their own country."

Baca said he fully backs the House Democrats' proposal announced last week that would set two deadlines for progress to be made in Iraq - the first being July 1 - and mandate full American withdrawal from the war-torn country by the close of 2008.

Baca voted in favor of a nonbinding resolution opposing President Bush's troop "surge" strategy and is the only Inland Empire House member to vote against giving the president authority to unilaterally attack Iraq in October 2002.

Baca said the proposal for withdrawal strikes a balance between Republicans who want more time to stem the tide of violence and the far left wing of his party that wants troops out now.

Baca scoffed at notions raised by Republicans last week that setting a timetable for withdrawal aids the enemy and endangers American lives.

"This is about caring for our troops, giving them what they need while they're there and withdrawing them when they should not be (there)," said Baca, who added that he believed Iraq was in the throes of a civil war that would rage long after American involvement ends.

Baca, who served as an Army paratrooper in the Vietnam War, called the recent evidence of inadequate care for combat troops at Walter Reed Medical Center "a tragedy" that deeply affected him. He said he will visit wounded troops at the military hospital Tuesday.

One theme that resonated with members of the Democratic club was the cost of the war and how resources could have been put to better use in domestic programs, particularly education, housing and health are.

Putting the war's cost at more than $400 billion, Baca said the money could have funded "20 million four-year college scholarships."

But the stories about the Walter Reed hospital were fresh in the minds of some.

"When I read about how our veterans are not being taken care of ... we've got to clean that up," Gil Navarro, who sits on the county school board, told Baca.
